The "Big Picture" of Stroke Rehabilitation Clinical Research: A Unique and Innovative Database of over 3700 Stroke Rehabilitation Motor-cognitive Randomized Controlled Trials

Brief Session Description : This session will explore the "big picture" of a systematic review of over 3700 stroke rehab motor-cognitive randomized controlled trials. In particular 1) which of over 850 outcome measures are most commonly utilized; 2) how a large data base facilitates network meta-analyses; 3) concerns that over 50% of studies are conducted in the chronic phase; 4) the explosive rise of studies conducted in low-to-middle income countries; 5) female recruitment to studies remaining under 40%. Failure to understand the "big picture" makes it difficult to integrate individual studies into the "big picture" negatively impacting knowledge translation.

Session Objectives:

  • Appreciate the existing and past use of outcome measures in RCTs as a guideline to future use of outcome measures. Recognize the opportunities such a large evidence-base provides to better personalize and optimize stroke rehab clinical care. Understand the importance of time post stroke in interpreting and applying evidence from stroke rehab motor-cognitive RCTs. Understand the changing nature of stroke rehab clinical research globally and its implications.
