Xiaolei Hu, MD, PhD, FACRM, is an Associate Professor and Head of the academic discipline
in Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) at Umeå University, as well as a senior consultant PRM
physician at the University Hospital of Umeå, Sweden. In addition to her roles as a
researcher, educator and physician, she is actively involved in national and international
rehabilitation organizations.
Dr. Hu’s research focuses on neurorehabilitation with exploring cognitive recovery,
neuroplasticity, and the implementation of evidence-based practice in clinical setting. She is
currently leading a largest rehabilitation RCT in Sweden to assess a novel digital follow-up
tool Rehabkompassen® among stroke patients. In collaboration with her global network, Dr.
Hu is engaged in research on post-stroke rehabilitation services across Europe, traumatic
brain injury, spinal cord injury, Covid-19 and e-health.
She has supervised 3 PhDs, 2 postdoctoral fellows and 18 MD students to completion, and is
currently supervising 2 PhDs and 2 postdoctoral fellows. She leads a multidisciplinary research team
that includes research nurses, clinical trial coordinators, biomedical engineers, a health
economist and statisticians.
Dr. Hu is a frequent invited speaker and serves as a chairperson on program committees for
national and international conferences. she leads and collaborates with the clinical
multidisciplinary teams to provide rehabilitations for individuals with various neurological
disabilities.
She currently serves as the Coordinator of the Scientific Committee and an Executive
Member of the European Society of Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine (ESPRM) , as well as
Chair of the Stroke Special Interest Scientific Committee (Stroke-SISC). Additionally, she is
Co-Chair of the ClinFit Committee within the International Society of Physical &
Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM).
