Dr. Abena Yeboaa Tannor, MD, MSc. (Rehab), MGCPS (Fam. Med), FGCPS (Sports, Exercise and Rehab Medicine), is Ghana’s first specialist in Sports, Exercise, and Rehabilitation Medicine and a Family Physician currently serving as the Head of the Sports, Exercise, and Rehabilitation Medicine Fellowship at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. With over 16 years of clinical experience, Dr. Tannor is a pioneer in integrating sustainable rehabilitation and assistive technology into primary health systems within low- to middle-income countries. She is the founder and Clinical Director of the Alera Rehabilitation and Sports Centre, which stands as the only accredited center for training physicians in rehabilitation and sports medicine. In addition to her clinical leadership, she provides technical expertise as a Technical Advisor for ATscale/UNOPS.
Her primary research focuses on the integration of rehabilitation into primary care within low-resource settings, specifically through the development of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Basic Package of Interventions for Rehabilitation (Basic PIR). Having previously served as a consultant for the WHO, she led the multi-country pilot testing of the Basic PIR toolkit across seven countries and authored foundational research on its application in primary care. She continues to influence global health governance as a member of the Steering Committee of the World Rehabilitation Alliance and the advisory board for Cochrane Rehabilitation.
In the field of para-sports, Dr. Tannor has held significant leadership roles, having been recently appointed to the Classification Committee of the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA). Her extensive leadership in the sector includes serving as the Chief Medical Officer for the 1st African Paralympic Games and leading Ghana’s medical team for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Academically, she contributes to training at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and has published extensively on rehabilitation workforce capacity and disability management in Africa.
