Brief Session Description : Adults with cerebral palsy (CP) face unique health challenges, including pain, elevated chronic disease risk, and early functional decline. Drs. Mark Peterson and Edward Hurvitz will present their cutting-edge research and that of colleagues on how changes in growth and development across the lifespan change anatomy, physiology and function contributing to early life onset of these issues and the problem known as 'early aging.' They will discuss approaches to address these problems in the clinic as well as at the policy level, reviewing challenges in provision of preventive care and access to health care in general.
Session Objectives:
Identify the effects of cerebral palsy on growth and development of children through adulthood, including the anatomical and physiological differences that affect health and functional outcomes.;
Describe the risk of chronic disease, pain, and loss of function (often called 'early aging') in adults with CP based on their differential growth and development;
Develop a plan for clinical care of people with cerebral palsy which will minimize the risk of chronic disease, pain and functional loss.
