Objectives : Dementia is a condition in a decline in memory, cognition, behavior, and daily tasks. Cognitive rehabilitation (CR) is a strategy to preserve independence in these patients. Additionally, CR involving family participation was known to increase the effectiveness. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify the factors of patients that determine family participation through whether to participate in family meetings (FM) (between FM (+) and (-) group).

Design: Fifty patients with dementia in the ages above 20 who visited Asan Medical Center for the CR were enrolled. The CR was conducted 1-2 times a week in hospital and consisted of computer-based training and training using workbooks. FM was suggested to the families of all patients receiving CR. The patient's age, gender, diagnosis, guardian, number of received CR were investigated. MMSE, Global Deterioration Scale (GDS), Activities daily living (ADL), instrumental ADL (I-ADL) and other
values associated the cognition were measured at the start of treatment and end or current time of the treatment.

Results: Age of patients with FM (+) group was younger than FM (-) group. The number of receiving CR were higher in FM (+) group. ADL was higher in FM (+) group and neuropsychiatric inventory (NPI) severity was significantly lower in FM (+) group. There was no significant change in cognitive evaluation after the CR in both groups. We also conducted univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis for prediction of family meeting participation. Age, number of receiving CR was clinically correlated with family meeting participation.

Conclusion: In this study, we investigated the factors for patients attending family meetings, and it was related to the number of receiving CR and age. Therefore, it is suggested that initiating CR at an early age, also conducting for longer period should be considered for active family participation, such as family meetings.
