The initiation of feeding, fluids, and oral medication pertains to patients with cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and traumatic brain injury, who can follow commands and have good swallowing ability clinically and endoscopically confirmed.
Results:
We monitor every 15 days:
We weigh the patients twice a month and assess nutritional progress with the patient's weight/ideal body weight
: Food intake entirely from the enteral feeding catheter. Gradual reduction of feeding with the enteral catheter and increase of p.o. feeding, to meet the patient's caloric needs. Weekly reduction of feeding through the catheter by 20%. Monitoring of parameters on a periodic basis (every 15 days). Completion of the transition to p.o. feeding within 30 days.
Conclusion:
The removal of enteral feeding tubes and exclusive feeding of food, fluids, and medications orally must be safe and meet the nutritional needs of the patient.
